Sacred

What do you consider sacred? Why?

(I mean this in any way/ context imaginable - and referring to everything or anything, whether it be tangible, intangible, an idea or a physical item.)

An object with religious value. Economically speaking, it will not be given up unless its owner is offered its monetary value + sentimental value + religious value (may be part of its sentimental value).

One's word. In the end of the day if people can't believe you, trust you, then your worth is not very much.

Sacred, or "SANCTVM" is a Latin word and concept which should evoke totally different things than the word "מוקדש". "Kedusha" is separateness, for a purpose, not anything that sacred might man.So it's not clear which is referred to, or even what's meant by "sacred" (EJB or harry-er).

In regards to the Bible, G-d is sacred. WE should be sacred. The Mikdash is sacred, Jerusalem is sacred, Israel is sacred (עשר קדושות). We can achieve sanctity through the mizvot.

(I'm not sure what I'm getting at, but what I know I don';t like is Jews who only do things because it gives them a feeling of "holiness", like lighting candles by the tomb of King David, or saying tehilim by the kotel, etc).

I agree sacred is an abstract term and is not limited to objects. I am just defining what objects are sacred.

I would say that something is sacred when it is doing or being that which G-d intended it to do or be.

I.E. marriage is sacred while adultery is not, it is profane.

Our pure praise of G-d is sacred, but our seeking of praise from others is profane.

Sacred and a purity of G-d's will go hand-in-glove.

What I find sacred is the time I spend with my husband and the kids, as a group or one-on-one, with no distractions.

RaggedyMom, I like what you said. Sacred time is as important as sacred things.

raggedy/shira- as indicated in Heschel's "the sabbath" the first thing g-d made holy (kadosh) was time, then a people, then a place (the mishkan/tabernacle)
