You have reached a whole new level of computer woes when, after your DVD player not only does not play but scratches discs, Paint does not work, iTunes killed itself, and even Windows Media Player won't play certain videos (and yes, I downloaded the most current version), your laptop is melting.
I opened my laptop tonight to reveal what appeared to be a burst of steam (steam!) and then noticed that contrary to happily hibernating, my laptop keyboard has actually further degenerated in the course of one night than it had the year over. Yes, the space bar has been melting for a while, but the damage to the E, D and S keys all happened over the course of this one day.
Observe:
However, I think that this simply gives my laptop character. Yes, that's right. My laptop has been used and bears its battle-scars and medallions proudly. I don't want to give it up. I love it. And so it shall remain with me, melting keys and all. It's actually really fun to type on; the melted plastic exactly fits the pads of my fingers. And I've grown accustomed to the frightening lava-like temperature of my keyboard. It warms my (usually cold) hands. But question for the audience: do any of you have laptops that are melting?

I've heard of art imitating life, but we have technology imitating life.
On a side note, you should backup anything important, because your laptops day are seriously numbered.
How do you mean - technology imitating life? Am I melting? (M-E-ELTING, as The Wicked Witch of the West screeched...)
When it comes to backing things up, you're right, I should...but ah well.
That just looks very cool. It does give the computer character.
There are online backup services like Mozy, DropBox, and others...but get your important files off of your computer NOW!
Have you thought about replacing the computer? Maybe the computer is trying to tell you something :-P
My laptop isn't melting, as far as I know, but my space bar looks just like yours, and even in the same spot!
As a confessed Mac fanatic, I would say that your PC is rebelling!
Seriously, most laptop computers are made with a hodgepodge of components that are never tested together. Thus, they can interact poorly and cause system failure.
I would second the recommendation to back up your files NOW!!!
Chana,
Back up your files. The least you can do is save your documents on a USB stick. I didn't think it would happen to me, but my computer failed to work one day, and I ended up losing a ton of stuff that I did not have saved elsewhere.
Just copy and paste to the USB device. It should not take more than 5 minutes, and you won't regret that you did so.
-Y.
Get rid of it. It's a fire hazard.
(Let me fish out one of my father's old pocket protectors before I post this)
#1--as others have said backup your files ASAP!
#2--How old is your laptop?
#3--do you allow your laptop any ventilation? That is to say do you usually keep it flat on a surface?
I'm thinking I may know what ails your maching

Chana, time to get a new laptop before it blows up or something.
its because your fan vent doesnt have anywhere to breathe. there are vents on the bottom of you laptop which should be kept clear, otherwise your computer will overheat.
Its not a mac-pc thing, its the individual manufacturers designing it badly.
and i reiterate, backup now. your hard drive is next to melt
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That PC has a BIG FEVER. you should give it a checkup or put it in the frezer for a night.
anyway......what happens when it completely melts...or should i say Burns up?
Uhhh, FIRE HAZARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn't leave that thing in the same room with you at night!
My friend and I were recently talking about how modern society has evolved to become so integrated with technology. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.
I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as memory becomes less expensive, the possibility of copying our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about almost every day.
