Everything Means Nothing to Me

Have you ever come across a song it hurts to listen to?

But it's so beautiful that you can't stop.

For me, that would be Elliott Smith's "Everything Means Nothing to Me."

You can hear it here (ignore the video) and see the lyrics here.

As far as I'm concerned, the man was a poet.
All the greatest songwriters are.

As for the music, this has to be the most disturbing, haunting piece I've yet heard.

Wow I love these words. Vaguely reminiscent of "One Tin Soldier," but a lot less preachy. Have you checked out Leonard Cohen at all? He's very good at the haunting lyrics...

Elliot Smith was amaster singer/songwriter - who was deeply and tragically destroyed by drugs - lost to the music-listening community far too early. That entire album (From a Basement?) id a masterpiece.
