in its measure

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for You are with me.
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Now what does that mean, that Your rod and Your staff comfort me?

I think it means Your attributes of Justice. Justice shall be served. It shall be measured out with the rod, parceled out by the staff.

I think it's part of the "L-rd is my shepherd" imagery. G-d's shepherd staff leads the psalter through the Valley of the Shadow of death, and despite the fact that it's a walk to death, His guidance is comforting.

TPW, why are you saying it's a walk to death? Why is it not just the shadow of death (aka not real death)?

Maybe it's not real death. Maybe it is. Either way, the imagery is of a shepherd guiding his flock. And either way, it's a resignation to G-d's will.

When a sheep gets separated from the flock and is lost and alone.....there's nothing more comforting than the blow of his shepherds rod on his back...
