Dress Robes, Finery, Clothing and Advice

Hey everybody!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Sukkos. I am having a very good one thus far, with some very nice weather.

I actually need some help.

I shall be attending a wedding in the semi-near future, and need to purchase a gown/ outfit for the occasion. It can be any color except white or off-white. I am not a very tall person, so I'm probably thinking of clothing for petites.

I assume that New York, if anywhere, is the place to find beautiful modest (by which I mean a relatively high neckline, skirt that reaches or covers the knees, and preferably sleeves, opaque, that reach to the elbow or beyond) clothing. Unfortunately, I do not know where in New York to look. Of course, there are all the exciting brand-name stores, but the majority of those clothes would need to be altered, and if there is some brand, or store, or place where I can buy dressy clothing without having to alter it, that would be ideal.

So...can you recommend stores/ places/ people to contact? Do they have websites, do I show up, do I make appointments- how do I go about this? If you're uncomfortable commenting and leaving information here, you could email me.

Thanks!

I've bought a few things from the Funky Frum website and I have been pretty happy with the quality and style of their clothes.

Why can't THIS be our Ghol Hamoed activity?

More on this later.

Hmm, I meant to spell that Chol Hamoed.

Either way, let me know!

My wife said to go to Flatbush or Williamsburg, in Brooklyn. Good luck!

Ghoul Hamoed sounds like fun! Sort of like a cross between Sukkos and Halloween.

Wait, that's what Sukkah hopping is for.

I vote for Burlington Coat Factory.

i vote: burlington coat factory (23rd/6th) [you can get cash returns now!]
or syms (54/park; wall st area -42 Trinity Pl. -- take the R to rector st)

i've not had any luck finding petite at century21.

maybe also check out daffy's (many sites) i verge more towards a child's 12/14 than a petite so ...

if you want to come out to brooklyn (flatbush/midwood) take the Q to ave J, walk down ave J towards coney island avenue (if you walk the wrong way you'll see yeshivah of flatbush & touro) on the same side as you exit the subway are some places (i think near e12) when you get to coney island on the same side (as that of eichlers) there are some shops and there are a few across the street as well (near "the buzz") while i live here i forget the names of them. i think the one on the same side as the buzz is less expensive than the other side of the street but I don't shop there often. if you have more questions just add an @gmail .. hope that helps.

oh and -- street tour of midwood

I've been to the Burlington Coat Factory only once, so I can't exactly vouch for them, but SYMS usually has a very solid selection and you can find a good price there. Of course, I speak mainly for the men's department, but I know my mother has gone shopping there, so the women's department can't be too shabby. And SYMS has branches in Jersey if you want to avoid sales tax.

I wanna celebrate Ghoul Hamoed...

Just ask Serach. Really.

Syms, eh? Why don't you send her to the Men's Wearhouse while you're at it.

Hey, SYMS has a women's section! Snerk.

This is when I should smirk and say something about inept, helpless men. *smirk*

Women, women, I call you to me! Come read this post. Help me out. Where is my Ask Shifra? Too busy with problems affecting the whole Jewish community, like economic debt. Ah well. And there goes my plan, dashed, shattered to pieces. Alas!

Chana: I have absolutely ZERO worthwhile advice to offer you, except to write to Ask Shifra. Of course, even if you asked for a clothing store in Israel, I'd be clueless...no need to smirk. I'ts obvious.

Fashion Island and Unique Boutique are the 2 stores on Coney Island in Flatbush that have pretty good prices. If you're looking for a ballgown skirt type of thing, don't forget to try Loehmann's. There's one on 7th Ave & W. 16 in Manhattan, and at Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. Manhattan's branch is better.

I noticed some really nice skirts as Macy's and Lord and Taylor (34th & Broadway / 39 & 5th)
