I am taking a Jeremiah class with Dr. Grunhaus. Can you tell me a little more about the class? I am also taking a 2 credit class taught by Rebbetzin Sarah Greer in Jewish history and philosophy. If you don't mind, I'm interested to know about your experience in both class. It was not as easy class because she covers a lot of information and talks fast- you have to show up, pay attention and write. There was no out of class work. However, you learn tons and it was very worthwhile. It was not a fluffy feel-good class, but a nitty gritty how did this halacha/minhag develop course. I kept my notes from that class and still reference them from time to time. If you can keep up with that type of learning, I'd strongly recommend that class(es?) because the information is so valuable for a Jewish woman.Nechamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13595852750636053352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12970718.post-51874385313120131732007-06-01T13:07:00.000-04:002007-06-01T13:07:00.000-04:00I did not take Mrs. Price's class, but my friends ...I did not take Mrs. Price's class, but my friends Dana and Chaya did. Both of them had nothing but good things to say. Apparently she favors an out-of-the-box approach; Dana described her as not being the type to tolerate fluff. She likes to get into the text itself. I only took two English classes, to cover B-requirements, and as a non-major, I would have been one of those annoying non-English-majors in the class. :)

I majored in PoliSci, which was practically a non-existant department when I started in Stern, but which Dr. Luders has worked tirelessly to enlarge and promote. He's always running events, getting speakers, putting up fliers with the classes being offered in the department, etc. They hired some new permanent staff (which the department sorely needed) while I was there and while I was on my way out as well. I actually preferred Dr. Daves' teaching style to that of Dr. Luders, because I felt that he was better at remaining impartial and not imposing his own politics on the subject material. When I was there, they still had a problem with a lot of non-majors taking classes they really weren't qualified to take (like your complaint with the English department--and yes, it IS annoying, because it really takes away from the classes), but I think that as of the year after I graduated, they were planning on enforcing pre-reqs/co-reqs to cut down on that problem. Maybe you could suggest such a solution to the English department?

I was somewhat stiffed when it came to FTOC-student stuff, because I came in January and there wasn't nearly as much stuff as there is at the beginning of the school year. And of course, the next year I was already not considered FTOC. Life goes on.Scrapshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15911315552965685448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12970718.post-81005533299767807892007-05-28T21:51:00.000-04:002007-05-28T21:51:00.000-04:00"The English Issue- I want classes that are specif..."The English Issue- I want classes that are specifically geared and tailored for English majors. Just you wait! :)

I, too, wish there were some better English classes. Also, just some more choice. I find that every semester, there is usually only one, maybe two English classes that I'm really excited about. I want there to be a LOT. I want to have a difficult time choosing. I want to feel like there's really a whole English world right within Stern. On the other hand, the fact that the English department is so small makes it easier to develop a relationship with the teachers. That's really nice.

Also, Jackie, Schottenstien does have a few double rooms but mostly singles.Erachethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00660802321998349072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12970718.post-1971038937865858832007-05-28T20:48:00.000-04:002007-05-28T20:48:00.000-04:00Hakiruv,I decided to keep that post for myself. As a r...Hey Chana, I found your post via Serand Ez. As a relatively recent Stern grad- Class of '05, I thought your summery was very accurate. I completely agree with you about the dating/marriage pressure-its so ingrained in schools social atmosphere: "You go to Stern to get your MRS." There are classes and Shuirim about dating/marriage, the way the dorm door gets decorated when someone gets engaged, the girls you see in the elevators with huge ice cubes on their fingers...

I think you should have also written about the "Thursday night Exodus," the trend of the "in towners" leaving school for the weekend. Also, in my time there was a growing conflict between the Frum and not-so-Frum (maybe you could call it "the skirts" vs "the pants"). Im sure that is still on-going and its definitely something worth mentioning.Nechamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13595852750636053352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12970718.post-2982902220690682872007-05-27T09:26:00.000-04:002007-05-27T09:26:00.000-04:00Mordy,Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that people are...Mordy,

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that people are asexual. Only that everything is not so pressing. At other colleges, there are different forms of conversations, no? When one sits in the cafeteria one hears people discussing their day, their classes, politics and ideals and events, no? Well, one hears this at Stern, but it is far more certain that you're going to hear a conversation about guys, dating and shidduchim to any of the above.

And the fact that there are those who almost feel guilty by default if they're not engaged by the time they graduate is simply problematic. That's because of all the pressure and focus on marriage.

Normal preoccupation with marriage/ dating/ relationships is fine; the pressure's simply more intense here (to the point where it can be bothersome.) I think it's probably also different if you're at Stern vs. YU; you probably feel it less. ;)Chanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17655144434904957767noreply@blogger.com
